What’s Your Favorite Spice or Seasoning?

Megan and I have a running joke about my favorite seasoning: After applying it to my food, I’ll ask how much she wants, and she’ll curse at me.

We have different tastes.

I use a variety of spices and seasonings, including frequent favorites garlic, garlic salt, Kosher salt, Maldon’s finishing salt, chicken salt, black pepper, and Billy Goat. But there’s one seasoning I reach for more than any other: Old Bay.

Old Bay Seasoning is, to me, what a low country boil tastes like. It’s a mix of salt, celery seed, pepper, paprika, cloves, cardamom, and other spices. It’s primarily for seafood, but I contend that it works on most savory dishes. For example, I use it almost daily for my deviled eggs.

Other than the taste, I think I have a sense of nostalgia connected to Old Bay. My mom cooked with it, and my extended family applied it generously to grilled shrimp at beach family reunions.

Do you have a favorite spice or seasoning that you use more than any other? I’d love to hear about it.

  1. I used to use a lot of Lowry’s seasoned salt, but I had a heart scare, so a friend of mine helped make a recipie for an extremely low salt seasoning. For those that might have heart issues, try this:

2 Tablespoons NoSalt (or a salt substitute of choice)
    4 Teaspoons Paprika
    1 teaspoon Celery Salt
    1 teaspoon black pepper
    1 teaspoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon sugar (to counteract the NoSalt’s bitterness)

  2. Funny, yesterday I was making soup, I opened the spice drawer and I saw Old Bay and I was thinking “Where did I see this just now??” and I couldn’t for the life of me remember until now that I came back here.

But anyway my favorite spice is turmeric, I love making yellow turmeric rice…. and fun fact I just realized it’s turmeric and not tumeric..ha.
