We watched the thought-provoking rom com movie “Eternity” over the weekend, and I have some thoughts (including that I really enjoyed it).
The core idea is that two elderly people pass away within a week of each other. They are transported to a purgatory-like place (arriving in the version of their bodies that represent when they were happiest) where each of them decided where they want to spend eternity. The purgatory is humorously filled with vendors promoting different eternities, like beach eternity, mountain eternity, yacht eternity, etc.
Complicating things is the three-person relationship at the center of the movie. Joan was married to Luke for a few years before he died in a war, and then she was married to Larry for 60+ years. Luke has waited in purgatory for Joan, giving her a really difficult choice: Does she spend eternity with the person with whom she loved but missed out on spending a life with, or does she spend it with the person she lived with for many years already?
If the answer seems obvious, the movie does a really good job of showing that there may not be a clear “correct” answer.
Even without the movie’s complication, I found it fun to discuss with Megan which eternity I would choose if this is how the afterlife actually works. The tough thing is that I’m much more interested in who is there (my dad, Biddy, etc) than the setting. But what if they–and other people who may pass between now and then–choose a variety of different eternities? It’s tough!
We also watched “People We Meet on Vacation” over Valentine’s weekend, which I enjoyed more than I expected (and would recommend) even though I don’t have anything particular to say about it.
Did you watch any rom coms over the weekend?
