Have You Watched “Project Hail Mary”? (My Thoughts)

As a big fan of the book and directors Lord & Miller, I had high expectations for the film version of Project Hail Mary. I’m happy to share that the cinematic experience lives up to those high expectations (and even exceeds them in a few ways).

I love that Andy Weir’s novels each feature a relatable protagonist in a difficult, mildly sci-fi situation that they have to science their way out of. Each of the books are optimistic about the future and for humankind, which is exactly what I needed to see right now.

The things you’ll learn in the first 5 minutes of the movie are that Ryan Gosling’s character is alone on a spaceship and that he has an important job to do…but he has amnesia from the long journey, so we learn about what he’s remembering at the same time he does (thanks to flashbacks).

The book is emotionally powerful and funny, but the movie ratchets up both. I laughed a lot, and I cried a lot. Gosling is excellent, as is the supporting cast.

My favorite line in the movie is: “Anyone can be brave. You just need someone to be brave for.” This made me think of how I cared about Biddy, my late cat. There were times when I was brave pre-Biddy (and plenty of times I was cowardly), but with Biddy, being brave was my instinct. His safety, security, and comfort were more important to me than anything.

So, yeah…that led to more tears in the movie too.

I highly recommend Project Hail Mary, if not just to remind you who you’re brave for. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
