I love a heist movie, but in the 9 years since the previous Now You See Me movie, I completely forgot that these are about magician thieves pulling off grandiose heists. So I was delighted to remember this key detail during the first few minutes of the third installment, which we saw in the theater … Read more
Just a few days ago I mentioned that I’m less inclined to get excited about an animated show than a live-action show. But what about when an animated movie is made into a live-action film? Despite how much I like getting excited about things, this is still something that typically doesn’t pique my interest. If … Read more
Pixar’s latest movie, Elio, is a prime example of the importance of clear marketing: I really enjoyed the movie, but before watching it I wasn’t aware of any hook that would entice me to watch it. Actually, the hook is there, but it’s kind of an awkward hook to promote: Elio is a movie about … Read more
I must admit that this Netflix movie has been completely off my radar until a friend raved about it at a recent game night (he really sold me when he said the animation studio was the same as Into the Spider-Verse). Megan and I watched it the following evening, and it’s so much fun. The … Read more
A few days ago I mentioned that The Fantastic Four: First Steps had instantly jumped to join my favorite superhero movies. Someone asked me what my other favorites were, and I found it surprisingly difficult to narrow it down even to just a top 10: Whether it’s Marvel, DC, or beyond, there are a lot … Read more
I walked out of the theater after watching Fantastic Four: First Steps with the biggest smile on my face. Even now I’m happy just thinking about it. I laughed and cried my way through an excellent movie last night. If you like indie, small-cast, beautiful location films with memorable music, I highly recommend The Ballad of Wallis Island. It’s a much more character-driven than plot-driven movie, though I want to avoid saying too much about it so you can unravel it on … Read more
It’s been a while since we’ve watched a movie in the theater. I was hoping to see Sinners, but then I got worried about Thunderbolts spoilers (and was encouraged by the great reviews), so we saw that instead. Still hoping to see Sinners soon, though! I was a little worried that the movie would be … Read more
As is the case with most movies that surprise me, I went into the Den of Thieves duology with low expectations. Based on what little I knew, they looked like a grittier version of The Fast & the Furious. But reviews described them as heist movies, so I finally decided to try the first movie. … Read more
I recently watched a rom-com-drama called The Life List, in which the main premise is that the protagonist tries to check off everything on a bucket list she made as a kid. To its credit, the movie pokes at the relevance of using a list you wrote when you were 8 to influence decisions you … Read more
