We’re currently finishing season 3 of The Orville, which is excellent. As much as I enjoyed the humor in the first two seasons, the show really seemed to take of this season, doing what sci-fi does best: It addresses important modern questions in a futuristic setting. The stakes are also raised significantly this season with … Read more
About a year ago, I decided that it was time to give my 2003 Camry to a friend, and took the plunge and bought a new Tesla. As I wrote about here, I really enjoy the various features in the car, and thanks to its software updates, it keeps getting better. A recent update brings … Read more
If tomorrow you woke up as an eccentric billionaire–the type found in many works of sci-fi fiction (and increasingly in real life too)–what moonshot idea would you pursue? This is intended purely as a fun, hypothetical question. Real-life people who are in possession of that amount of wealth are the subject of controversy (the taxes … Read more
For years I’ve been enamored by the idea of flying cars and jetpacks as viable modes of transportation. I think this stems both from a fascination with futuristic technology and a general dislike of traffic, inefficiency, and wasted space. We’re still far away from flying vehicles as depicted in fiction: Cars that lift vertically out … Read more
In March, I picked up my long-range Tesla Model 3 in St. Louis, almost immediately earning a speeding ticket because of the car’s effortless acceleration. This weekend we embarked on a long road trip from St. Louis to Virginia to see my family. I’ve taken this trip many times in my old Camry, and it’s a doozy. My body doesn’t like sitting for 13 hours. I now have a Tesla Model 3. I was curious to see the impact of … Read more
Ever since Megan got me into coffee a year and a half ago, my mornings have involved boiling some water and pouring it into a French press. This sounds fairly mild, but there was an element of danger for the first 12 months or so. Megan has a stovetop kettle that was probably forged in … Read more
Even though 99% of my driving involves short trips around St. Louis, one of my concerns with getting a Tesla Model 3 was the challenge of the occasional long road trip. I try to visit my parents in Virginia once or twice a year (13-hour road trip), and Megan’s family lives in Kansas City (4 … Read more
I’m not a car person. In 2007, I bought a used Toyota Camry, and I happily drove it for 14 years. It got me from place to place, didn’t break down, and had seat warmers, so I was happy. I used those 14 years to put away a little money every month so I’d be … Read more
I want to remember this moment, so I’m commemorating it here. A few days ago, we sat down at lunch to watch episode 2 of season 3 of the delightful A.P. Bio on Peacock (NBC’s streaming service). But to watch that episode, we needed to subscribe to Peacock (up until then, it was free). So … Read more
