I think I’ve finally figured out Twitter. For myself, at least.
I have an ongoing list of things I want to blog about. The list currently has hundreds of items, many of them not worth writing more than a sentence or two about. This list has been growing longer and longer.
My new blog format (if it sticks–thanks for your feedback!) allows me to post more than one entry a day and still have all of them be right up in front when you load that page. Entries like this, for example, that aren’t really the “featured” entry of the day. But it still won’t help me clear all the items off my list.
Then I realized that Twitter is the perfect solution. 140 characters are more than enough to recommend a cool website I heard about, a “brilliant” idea I have, or a random thought. If people see that stuff, fine; if not, no big loss (nothing on Twitter can be a “must-read,” because the odds are pretty good that even your most avid followers won’t catch everything you post).
