It's Twitter Time

I think I’ve finally figured out Twitter. For myself, at least.

I have an ongoing list of things I want to blog about. The list currently has hundreds of items, many of them not worth writing more than a sentence or two about. This list has been growing longer and longer.

My new blog format (if it sticks–thanks for your feedback!) allows me to post more than one entry a day and still have all of them be right up in front when you load that page. Entries like this, for example, that aren’t really the “featured” entry of the day. But it still won’t help me clear all the items off my list.

Then I realized that Twitter is the perfect solution. 140 characters are more than enough to recommend a cool website I heard about, a “brilliant” idea I have, or a random thought. If people see that stuff, fine; if not, no big loss (nothing on Twitter can be a “must-read,” because the odds are pretty good that even your most avid followers won’t catch everything you post).

If you’re interested in that stuff, click the button below to join me on Twitter.

  1. You know… There was a time when I first heard of Blogs. I said to myself, “Self, what kind of self-important ninny thinks that ANYONE cares what they have to say on any random topic. We have a free market in Radio and TV to keep out the garbage, and if they can’t get ad revenue, we never have to hear from them again.” Then Norman (one of the voices rambling through my head), said, “I KNOW! What’s worse, why on God’s green earth would anyone ever choose to follow some numnut’s random opinions on whatever crosses their mind. SHEEP! They’re all SHEEP!”

Then I found you Jamie. And my heart was content with just one blog, just for a second, just to see how it feels.

Now there’s Twitter. I think to myself, “Self, what kind of self-important … yadda, yadda, yadda.” Then Norman Chimes in, and we have the entire conversation all over again.

The long and short of it is, Jamie, I’m afraid of your twitter. I don’t know what it’ll do to me. I may change my mind later. But this technology is new and scary.

  2. Well, I’m honored that I’ve helped you adjust to some of these new forms of communication.

I truly think blogs are here to stay. In fact, I think newspapers are moving to a more web-based blog-like format–I think it’s the future of reporting news.

Twitter is another animal. It might just be a fad that’ll die off. I think the question is, what can Twitter do FOR you? So far, all that Twitter has added to my life are (a) something to check out when I’m bored (either to view posts or post something of my own) and (b) links to a few interesting articles that I otherwise wouldn’t have heard of.
