There’s been a pretty incredible story happening in the English Premier League (soccer) this season. For context, I should note that in the EPL, there’s no tournament at the end of the season–whichever team is at the top of the standings when the season ends will win the league. Leicester City was one of the … Read more
If you watch soccer, you’re familiar with the penalty kick: You put the ball down about 15 yards from the goal with only the goalie in your way. It’s as close to a sure thing as you get in soccer. I’ve seen hundreds–nay, thousands–of penalty kicks in my life. But I’ve never seen anyone take … Read more
For years now, there has been a debate about whether or not collegiate athletes should be paid in a similar way to professional athletes. I say “in a similar way” because the NCAA already makes the argument that student-athletes are compensated through scholarships and education. Last Saturday I was flipping through the channels after eating … Read more
Last week I debated one of life’s greatest mysteries: Would I prefer for Back to the Future II be right about its prediction that the Cubs would win a World Series in 2015 or that my team, the St. Louis Cardinals, win the whole thing? The question was on my mind because the Cubs played … Read more
This is the question I am pondering. You see, “Back to the Future II” made a subtle prediction back in 1989. The future portion of the movie takes place in 2015, and in the background of one scene is a holograph congratulating the Chicago Cubs on winning the World Series. A few minutes ago I read that Adidas gave NBA star James Harden a 13-year, $200 million endorsement deal to wear their shoes on and off the court. That’s a staggering amount of money. In fact, I wondered for a few seconds if Adidas even makes that much money, but I took a look at … Read more
I love highlights of any sport. In fact, as ESPN proved by showing cricket highlights earlier this year, I’ll watch highlights of sports I know absolutely nothing about, and I’ll enjoy them! I’ve become a little jaded about a common baseball highlight that ESPN features. At any time in the summer, if you go to … Read more
The headbutt: A class move in action movies and soccer games. But does it make any sense? I saw an article today about soccer superstar Messi headbutting an opponent, which made me think of the broader topic of headbutting. I just don’t get it. Now, I don’t condone violence of any kind. But if you’ve … Read more
Disclaimer: The title of this post as well as some of the content of this post is parody. I don’t actually think The Rock–a man–won the Women’s World Cup. Disclaimer: If it doesn’t make sense as to why this post now has a ton of disclaimers, read the comments. It’s a scientific fact: The Rock … Read more
Can I just devote this post to saying how incredibly excited I am that the US women’s team is returning to the World Cup finals on Sunday after their victory over Germany today? I was hesitant to post this, because I generally root for all teams that play beautiful soccer, and both Germany and the … Read more
